This month’s focus:

Asking for what we need to grow our coaching practice

Your host: Shirley Smith

Asking for what we need is easy right? If only it was that easy we wouldn’t find ourselves holding back or putting off making the marketing calls or following up on the ideas to grow our coaching practices.

In this lab we will explore ways to find that inner confidence to ask for what we need. We’ll also look at ways to embody more of what we want. Getting the results we want is as much about how we come over to potential business partners or clients – much of what we communicate is less about the words we speak (although don’t get us wrong – they are important) and more about the clarity of intent, what we embody as well as the energy and conviction with with we convey our message.

* We offer this event as a gift to those who want to participate and explore. At the end, you can gift back what this experience was worth to you.

Reasons organisations go shopping for coaching

Your host: Shirley Smith

We will explore 3 different categories of reasons that Human Resource Professionals and Line Managers purchase ‘coaching’. Some pragmatic, some well considered as part of the Human Resource Strategy. Our unique coaching offering is rarely a good match for a ‘one size fits all’ – so which page of the catalogue of reasons that companies buy coaching are you best suited to? And what different language or focus would you use to be positioned on the right page? Making a good fit for what organisations are looking for and for what you have to uniquely offer? You’ll leave this session with ideas about in what ways your offering links to a strategic organisational need.

* We offer this event as a gift to those who want to participate and explore. At the end, you can gift back what this experience was worth to you.

Your host: Daniela Razocher

As a coach, we respond in the moment to what is coming up with our clients. And here we can do this for ourselves. Our overarching theme is Grow, Prosper, Thrive as a coach. In the first 3 episodes we will have explored different aspects of who we are, what we offer and the context that makes our work as a coach highly relevant. Experience has shown taught us that out of these sessions, a new topic to be explored will emerge. It will be in the same direction of travel as our first 3 sessions for sure. We have some ideas around the end symbolism of the end of the calendar year, winter, preparing for 2020. For now they will simply remain those, ideas.

Action Lab – Come, Make, Do

Your host: Daniela Razocher

A new year & fresh energy to make things happen. Make something move from an idea to an actual thing.

This is our chance to do something that we may have been putting off for a while, or been too focussed elsewhere to carve out time for. Or maybe it’s just a tiny bit scary to do on our own so we haven’t so far. Support is at hand. Join this session to both support others and be supported.

We often hear coaches say it’s tricky to

  • write another blog
  • update a page on the website
  • create a new profile image
  • make a video introducing myself
  • do a facebook or linkedin live (video recording)

It’s certainly easier when there are friends around to give a helping hand, start off the technology while you remain composed, or give a quick critique or encouragement with getting the right words down on paper. So, that’s the focus of this action lab.

Leadership Embodiment
Leven One Certified Training

In this 2 – day experiential workshop you will discover the power of working with the body-mind to bring your best self to your daily living. With the aim of ensuring deeper learning, the workshop will be supplemented with post-workshop input. There will be optional online pre-workshop material available to support you with foundational knowledge to help you quickly move into practical application. Post-workshop you will pair with a fellow workshop participant over a number of weeks prior to a follow-up online session with Paul King, our workshop facilitator.

More details

The workshop explores and expands on Wendy Palmer’s third book: ‘Leadership Embodiment  How the way we sit and stand can change the way we think and speak’. The Level One workshop provides insight and awareness on what happens when we consciously move and speak from a more aligned place.

Explore & Discover

    • What it means to be a leader worth following
    • How your habitual patterns under stress show up in your body
    • How to resourcefully handle pressure or stress
    • Acknowledging and moving beyond judgements and fears
    • Relevant neuroscience
    • The power of being centred and balanced
    • Aligning and focusing your energy to achieve your goals
    • Tuning into others and your intuition
    • Listening to others without taking things personally
    • Skilfully speak your truth with clarity, confidence and heart

As a leader, coach, teacher or wherever you work, you will be able to practically apply the learning immediately as you create the foundation for developing and fine-tuning your skills over time. If you already have somatic training this will compliment what you have done before.

Who is this for?

  • Leaders who are seriously interested in their own self-development
  • Senior OD/HR professionals
  • Coaches, Mentors & Facilitators
  • Change professionals
  • Those interested in becoming qualified as a Leadership Embodiment Coach/Trainer

Embodiment in Leadership & Coaching

An evening exploring the power of an embodied approach for personal and professional development plus time to embed your learning.

Whether the term ‘embodiment’ is new to you or you have heard of it and are curious to understand a bit more about what it means – this introductory workshop will provide you with the foundational concepts.

More details

During this session and beyond we will explore practices for working with the body-mind in coaching and leadership development. The role of the body in resourcing ourselves especially when under pressure and in creating sustainable change is significant. We will look at how the patterns of the body work more quickly than the cognitive mind and win out under stress, without development of practices to counter the innate responses of our nervous system.

We will look at how to centre and connect when under pressure and how to use the body to quickly shift to more resourcefulness and resilience. Bringing our somatic intelligence, alongside our intellect and emotional intelligence can create a truly integrated and coherent approach to our coaching, leadership and energy management. We will be drawing upon various somatic and embodiment approaches, linking them with neuroscience to realise the best of ourselves and each other.

The workshop will provide an overview about working with the wisdom of the body-mind and leadership embodiment in particular. There will also be experiential activities working in pairs.

For those who would like to carry the learning on beyond this short session, we will set-up structured working together in small groups of 2 or 3 beyond this evening experience and ahead of a post-workshop follow-up online session.

Holding Space for Self-Organising Teams

This workshop will explore the difference of how teams relate to leadership in an agile context versus in the more classical hierarchical setting. In both settings the role of the leader or facilitator is crucial and can encourage or discourage a team to perform. How do you manage the tension between leading, coaching and contributing?

More details

How do you hold the space for your teams?

As a leader or coach, how do you influence the teams you work with? When they are self-organising or more in a classical hierarchical setting? Whether you are a top-down leader or a ‘servant-leader’ working with teams in an agile context, you hold the very important task to generate the right conditions for creativity, innovation and collaboration. In this knowledge and digital economy, now more than ever, how you ‘hold the space‘ of working will influence team dynamics and their ability to perform.

Making the shift to self-organisation

Moving as a leader from a hierarchical setting to a self-organising setting is a great shift, often embraced with enthusiasm followed by a steep learning curve with tensions, anxiety and conflict along the way. Leaders often fall back into their more familiar, command & control role or can abdicate under the banner of ‘self-organisation’ and leave the team to deal with the problems. The purpose of this workshop is to explore how to ‘hold the space’ for teams without falling into these traps.

Holding Space as one of the most important leadership skills

What is this ‘holding’ and why is it one of the most important leadership skills for a group to function? Through learning facilitation practices and awareness of group processes, you can generate the right conditions for creativity, innovation and working together that are sustainable over time.

Who is this for?

This workshop is for anyone working in a team-environment. It is particularly helpful if you have had a number of years of experience leading teams in the classical hierarchical setting and would like to switch to a more agile self-organising setting. You may be:

  • Working as an agile coach or leader
  • Leading a community with self-organising teams
  • Working as a department or team-leader
  • Facilitating or coaching others in groups

What can you expect?

The workshop will be focused on experiential exercises through which leaders or facilitators experience how to ‘hold the space’ for themselves, others and the organisation. We will go into the newer theories of agile management (but not into detail of scrum/Kanban) and also dive into some older theories on group processes. The focus of the workshop will be around your experience:

  • how do you manage the tension between leading and contributing in a self-organising environment
  • becoming aware of your general pattern of how you hold space for yourself and for others and
  • a chance to experiment with new ways of holding.

What will be your key-takeaways?

After the workshop you will:

  • Understand the different levels of self-organisation and the function of hierarchy
  • Recognise that the space inside of you is as important as the space around you
  • Understand the art of “holding” and its need for people to flourish
  • Experience how your leadership style influences others and develops over time
  • Understand group dynamics and the role of uncertainty and anxiety
  • Experience how as a team-member you can hold the space and influence the conditions of creativity, innovation and collaboration.

Expanding Presence

As you walk into your coaching or mentoring space – how are you showing up?

Do you deliberately change your state to be wholly present for your clients? And what if you could increase that presence? Even a tiny little bit more. In what ways will that create a shift in the experience and outcomes for the other person?

Being aware of our presence is like adding another layer of paint to a picture: it adds a certain depth and richness to the quality of our work and as a compliment to the range of tools and experience you can draw on.

More details

So how do we grow and nurture this quality of being present in ourselves? There are a number of ways – at this second The Holding Space event we will focus on embodiment and ways we can increase our presence.

Growing your presence through embodiment
In this workshop, Daniela Razocher will take us through a number of physical exercises that support you in aligning your thinking, emotions and physical being for more presence.

We will also practice in groups how our presence affects the space around us:

  • You will be invited to ‘notice what we notice’ in each situation and how each is different depending on where we focus your attention.
  • You will ‘notice what you notice’ about your energy levels before, during and after being in different states or levels of presence.

You will have a chance to explore on how this feels within yourself and also experience what it feels like being on the receiving end as others change their levels of awareness, presence or intent.

Care about Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?
After completion of this workshop you will receive a certificate for 2.5 hrs of CPD. The competencies this workshop links to are here

Your ticket includes
Room rent, small facilitator fee, certificate of participation for CPD or credentialing, tea and nibbles on the day and admin charges.

Any remaining income after all these things have been taken care of will go towards setting up our supporting website, open resources pages and growing our holding space community.

We want to be inclusive. If finance is a theme for you please do get in touch at centre@the-holding-space.com

Stay connected with the Holding Space
For more information or any future events, join our growing Holding Space community of professionals who care about how they show up and their personal impact on the world. You can do that through our facebook page (holdingspace) or join our meetup (theholdingspace) community page.

The Holding Space is a generative learning space for professionals to safely explore and learn new ways of being. This gives us more choices on ways to respond in depending on what the situation is calling for. It expands our capacity in subtle ways that are instantly recognisable to others.
